The perfect installation height

The installation heights for bathroom elements are important for both tall and short people (© Geberit)

There is nothing more frustrating than a washbasin that has been mounted too low down. Every time you bend down to reach the tap, day in, day out, you will be reminded that a key aspect of bathroom planning – the installation height – was neglected.

So, at what height should washbasins, WCs or mirror cabinets be mounted? Well, the answer is simple: it depends on how tall or short you are and on whether you are fit or have restricted mobility. People who are around 1.76 m tall are fortunate, as they are the right size for the standards that determine installation heights. If you are any taller than this, an installation height of 80 cm for the washbasin is clearly going to be too low. The standard height of 40 cm for a WC might also be too low, as you end up squatting rather than sitting on the WC – this might be better for your body, but it is harder to get back up again.

If you do not instruct them otherwise, plumbers will install sanitary elements at the standard heights. If, however, you would prefer different installation heights, you should discuss this in advance with the plumbing company or planning office and reach a binding agreement. We also recommend reminding the contracted plumbers about this agreement shortly before they start the installation.

That’s what the standard says

Everyone is different, which is why everyone will have a different idea about what the perfect installation height is. If nothing is said to the contrary, plumbers will install bathroom elements at the heights stipulated in the standard.
